Customer Review: Fire hazard!

My husband purchased the Holmes HCH4077 online in November 2009. We have a cathedral ceiling in our living room, which requires a good bit of heating to keep it warm, so we wanted to turn the heat down to the rest of the house and just warm our bedroom at night. We started using the heater in mid-December and did not have any problems until this morning (Feb 8, 2010). We set the thermostat, as usual, to about 40% maximum (there's no numerical readout). The heater was sitting in an open area on a hardwood floor and was plugged directly into the wall outlet, no extension cords, as recommended. The heater was turned on around 10:30 pm and at 2:30am I awoke to a terrible noise and smoke. The unit was on fire! Thankfully, I woke up when the fire was just beginning and I extinguished it quickly (there was damage to my hardwood floor though). Upon inspection of the charred remains, it appears that the fire started with the electrical cord at the point where it enters the base of the heater. DO NOT USE THIS HEATER WHILE SLEEPING! Better yet, don't buy this heater for use at all.
